In ultrasonic testing, high-frequency sound waves are transmitted into a material to detect imperfections or to locate changes in material properties. For example, when a sound is introduced to a test object, the reflections or echoes produced by undamaged material will look different than the reflections or echoes produced by material with an imperfection.

Ultrasonic testing is able to detect the size and nature of small flaws or deep flaws, and since it does not involve the use of radiation, it presents no health hazards. However, extensive experience and careful attention by the technician is required to obtain best results with ultra sonic tests.

Ultra sonic testing is not recommended for thin or small parts or objects that are not homogeneous.
